Set up in 2005, Research Group 4 of the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) is engaged in research activities centred around four main areas: Interculturalism, Translation, Literary Theory and Inter-Arts Studies.
The group’s aim is to promote research in these areas within the cultural and literary traditions of the United Kingdom, and of the new English-speaking countries, while also contributing to the development of new course units at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the English Department of the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon University. Examples of such fruitful collaboration are the recently launched course units in Inter-Arts Studies (B.A. and M.A.), Canadian Studies (B.A. and M.A.), Irish Studies (B.A.) and Australian Studies (B.A., starting in 2009/10). A course unit in South African Studies is also planned for the near future.
This close relationship between research and teaching is sustained through the recruitment of young scholars, as well as through the organisation of various initiatives involving the academic community and partnerships with other institutions, whether in the form of conferences, lectures, and cultural and literary festivals, or through the publication of Portuguese translations of texts relevant to the areas under study.
