Operating within the framework of Human and Social Sciences, the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES/CEAUL) brings together groups of researchers dedicated to single and multidisciplinary lines of research in the fields of literature, culture and linguistics within the English-speaking world, with particular emphasis being given to contemporary issues in British and North American Studies. This type of research is further complemented by translation and reception studies, paying close attention to the connections between Portuguese culture and English-speaking cultures, as well as by inter-art studies.

‘Progress. A blessing or a curse?’ will be the third of a series of international conferences at the School of Arts and Humanities (University of Lisbon), promoted by the Research Group 2 (English Culture) of ULICES which have brought together Victorianist and Neovictorianist researchers, among others. The first event, (Victorians Like Us. Memories, dialogues and trends) in 2012, aimed at underlining the features of a complex and often contradictory period, where matrices of modernity and postmodernity could be found, a cultural influence still discernible today. Science Fiction and Fantasy objects are a permanent part of today’s cultural industry.  From the margins to mainstream culture, their ubiquity demands critical debate beyond the preconception of pop culture made for mass entertainment. The University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) invites you to take part in the 4th International Conference Messengers From the Stars: On Science Fiction and Fantasy to be held at the School of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon, November 16-18, 2016.
