Welcome to ULICES

Operating within the framework of Human and Social Sciences, the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES/CEAUL) brings together groups of researchers dedicated to single and multidisciplinary lines of research in the fields of literature, culture and linguistics within the English-speaking world, with particular emphasis being given to contemporary issues in British and North American Studies. This type of research is further complemented by translation and reception studies, paying close attention to the connections between Portuguese culture and English-speaking cultures, as well as by inter-art studies.

"Women and the Arts: Dialogues in Female Creativity" Videos

Women and the Arts: Dialogues in Female Creativity in the U.S. and Beyond (15-17 June 2011) was an international gathering that promoted a reflection on women's artistic production, contrasting the U.S. context with other cultures, and was organized by The American Studies Group of ULICES. The conference covered multiple areas, including writing, the visual arts, music, and the performing arts. We debated women's aesthetic expression in the U.S. and elsewhere in these diversified fields, from modernity to the contemporary age, and reflected on the specific conditions of production, circulation, and reception of their works.

New Site The Portuguese - English Platform of Anthologies of Literature in Translation

The Portuguese - English Platform of Anthologies of Literature in Translation aims to create an online platform that offers pedagogical support for the teaching of literary translation.  It will provide literary texts for translation practice organized into a corpus of collaboratively translated anthologies that contribute towards a broadening of the target literary system and might interest generalist publishers, thus introducing students to the professional environment of literary translation.
