Principal Investigator: Alexandra Assis Rosa

Research Group 7 was launched in 2007 and focuses on Reception Studies and Descriptive Translation Studies in Portugal in three main areas. Firstly, it participates in a joint project with the Centre for Studies in Communication and Culture of the Catholic University of Portugal (CECC-UCP) entitled “Translating Europe Across the Ages”. This project includes the creation of a critical bibliography of translated literature, published in book form between 1930 and 2000, as well as the study of the effects of censorship on translation and the study of the history of book publication and circulation in Portugal. Secondly, this research group provides a forum for the development of individual projects that comprise research into translational norms regarding linguistic variation in literary and audiovisual texts, the influence of paratexts in translation reading strategies, the role played by translation in importing literary genres or the profile of translators in contemporary Portuguese society. Thirdly, it also comprises projects related with the dissemination in Portuguese of both short stories in English and essays on the short story as a literary genre, working in close cooperation with the Centre of Portuguese Language Literatures of the Universities of Lisbon (CLEPUL) and the Society for the Study of the Short Story.

Projects:

• 2007-... Intercultural Literature in Portugal, 1930-2000: A Critical Bibliography 
  This 2007-initiated joint research project brings together two Portuguese research centres the Centre for Culture and Communication Studies, Catholic University of Portugal, Lisbon (CECC-UCP),and the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES). This joint research project is developed under supervision of Teresa Seruya (CECC), Alexandra Assis Rosa (ULICES) and Maria Lin Moniz (CECC), and aims to produce a critical bibliography of translated literature published in book-form in Portugal between 1930 and 2000. As such, it contributes to Translation Studies in Portugal by bridging  the chronological gap between 1930 and 2000 left uncovered by the seminal work A Tradução em Portugal, by Gonçalves Rodrigues, the five volumes of which map translation in Portugal 1495-1930. The first part of this index covering the years 1930-1955 is now available online since December 2010 at: http://translatedliteratureportugal.org/eng/index.htm

• 2007-…: the project Antologia(s) de conto inglês traduzido para português/ Anthology/ies of Short Stories in English translated into Portuguese aims to publish a selection of short stories by contemporary English language writers, some of which are being translated into Portuguese by University of Lisbon MA students, as part of their research projects in Literary Translation, (jointly) supervised by Research Group 7 members. This project benefits from the cooperation of the conference president of the Society for the Study of the Short Story in English and is supervised by João de Almeida Flor, Alexandra Assis Rosa and Luísa Falcão. Short stories currently being translated include works by Robert Olen Butler, Bharati Mukherjee, Clark Blaise, Ana Castillo, Claire Keegan and Tamas Dobozy (Society for the Study of the Short Story in English).
• 2008 -…: Tradução de bibliografia crítica sobre o género literário – conto/Translation of Critical Bibliography – Short Story.
  This project is being worked upon jointly by Research Group 7 and Isabel Rocheta and Serafina Martins, of the Centre of Portuguese Language Literatures of the Universities of Lisbon (CLEPUL), and its aim is to translate and publish the Portuguese versions of a selection of seminal English language works on the short story. These translations may result from MA projects being worked upon by students of the Department of English, (jointly) supervised by Research Group 7 members. It aims to disseminate, in Portuguese, English language essays on the short story. This project benefits from the cooperation of Susan Lohafer (University of Iowa, USA) and Maurice Lee (University of Central Arkansas, USA), leading members of the Society for the Study of the Short Story in English.
• 2008 -…: Produção de bibliografia de antologias de conto em inglês traduzido para português / Production of a bibliography of anthologies of English language Short Stories translated into Portuguese.
  This project aims to research the relevance of translation for the development of the literary genre of the “short story” in Portugal by producing a bibliography of anthologies of English language short stories translated into Portuguese and generally presented to the Portuguese reader in the form of anthologies (volumes/collections). Given the relevance of intercultural exchanges for the development of the short story, as well as the special status of anthologies as forms of creative rewriting, it also aims to research the “external history of translation”, by mapping such anthology volumes and analysing their paratexts. This project benefits from the cooperation of the Society for the Study of the Short Story in English, and it may also include the cooperation of other Portuguese and European research groups..
