Operating within the framework of Human and Social Sciences, the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES/CEAUL) brings together groups of researchers dedicated to single and multidisciplinary lines of research in the fields of literature, culture and linguistics within the English-speaking world, with particular emphasis being given to contemporary issues in British and North American Studies. This type of research is further complemented by translation and reception studies, paying close attention to the connections between Portuguese culture and English-speaking cultures, as well as by inter-art studies.

We have long felt a need to establish a collective umbrella for individually undertaken research projects, a commitment that, in the 1980s, gave rise to several major activities and initiatives. However, it may be said that the ambitions of ULICES, which is now dependent on the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), were to gain greater institutional consistency from 1993 onwards.

Since then, in accordance with a fundamental and applied academic research project that not only consolidates and promotes teaching in the area of English Studies at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, but also directs its work towards the provision of services to the community, ULICES has sought to attain all the goals set out in its Multi-Year Funding Programmes. Its commitment to this purpose has been confirmed by the classification of Excellent awarded by external assessment panels composed of international experts appointed by the FCT.

Furthermore, ULICES brings together a number of highly qualified university researchers. These are entrusted with the task of coordinating the work of the different research groups and ensuring the constant training and improvement of the younger members, making it possible to incorporate postgraduate students and postdoctoral scholars in the various research projects, as well as researchers from other academic institutions.

In bringing together different professional interests from a variety of disciplinary fields and specialities, as well as through the formulation of its medium and long-term programmes, ULICES is engaged in constant activity. Examples of its work include the organisation of international meetings, conferences and congresses, the regular publication of the academic review Anglo-Saxónica, essays and monographs in the collection entitled Cadernos de Anglística and a series of literary translations, entitled Textos Chimaera, as well as other sundry items of research work.

Conscious of its duty to meet specific Portuguese needs in the field of intercultural dialogue, ULICES has always been interested in multidisciplinary studies. It has entered into a number of cooperation agreements with other FCT centres and maintains permanent contacts with its counterparts at other academic institutions, collaborating in a number of (inter)national research projects.
