Other English-Speaking Literatures and Cultures (RG4)

Principal Investigator: Teresa Casal

Number of researchers: 10 - Integrated members (with PhD): 4 / PhD students: 4 / Other researchers: 2

Research Group 4 of the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) focuses on the English-speaking literatures and cultures that have emerged as autonomous areas of study over the last decades of the twentieth century, namely Irish Studies and the New Literatures in English from Australia, Canada, India, and South Africa.

Interdisciplinary research carried out by RG4 approaches these literatures and cultures both within their respective historical and geopolitical contexts, and in their cross-cultural relations. Bearing in mind the changing political architectures of homeland in societies marked by colonisation and migration, manifest in Canada’s 1988 Multiculturalism Act, Post-apartheid South Africa, post-1998 Peace Agreement Ireland, post-independence India, and the official apology to Australia’s Indigenous peoples (2008), RG4 launched the Representations of Home (RHOME) project (2013-2020). RHOME studies literary and visual representations of home/lessness and negotiations of identity and belonging in societies engaged in (re)configuring multiple and sometimes conflicting heritages. It pursues four strands of inquiry: home and language; home and place; home and conflict; home and the body.

As of 2014, RG4 activities include the Representations of Home Open Seminar (RHOSE), open to the community at large and at which academic and non-academic guest speakers address a specific strand of inquiry, and the first RHOME symposium in November 2014. Biennial RHOME symposia will follow in 2015, 2017, and 2019.
