ABSTRACT: This workshop will rehearse some of the prominent teaching methods of narrative medicine. Using the model of close reading of written texts, we will practice a parallel form of close listening, or attentive listening. The group will spend some time in a close reading of one or two selections of poetry or prose. I will choose Portuguese language texts with good English translations, so that we can mobilize concepts of translation not only from language to language but from the written word to the oral word.

After a spell of close reading, I will offer an expansive writing prompt, and all workshop participants will be invited to write for a few minutes to the prompt. This is pure creative writing—no essay questions! The work of the session will be to listen slowly and attentively to one another as we read aloud what we have written in response to the text. Our challenge will be to hear the narrative features that we notice in close reading—genre, diction, narrative strategy, temporal scaffolding, spatial detail, metaphor, tone, voice, and mood. A recent publication by my group in Columbia that includes a “Reading Guide” will be distributed prior to the workshop.
