Abstract: It is undeniable the fascination exerted by Law and Law Firms over the film industry of Hollywood. Since an early age films and series have been created and brought to us with this exact topic. How, throughout time, has the film industry influenced our perception of justice and protection of the highest moral values? What is the impact of the transposition of the Common Law reality into the European legal system reality? In this context, and taking as a starting point three fundamental films, our intention is to discuss the essential basis of the legal culture of the XXI century.

Session One: Introduction to the filmic narrative - the dialogue between law and cinema.

Session Two: Twelve Angry Men and the in dubio pro reu principle

Session Three: A Time to Kill and the Lexi Talionis

Session Four: How to Kill a MocMockingbird, natural law, positive law and conflict of social norms.

Session Five: European Cinema's perspective and Law


*Joana Tomaz Hilzbrich Joana Tomaz Hilzbrich has a degree in Law by the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. Currently, she is attending the first year of her Master's study in International Law and International Relations by the same Faculty. At the moment she is also a trainee lawyer by the Portuguese Lawyers Association since 2013, an Economic Law Tutor and is working at the Erasmus and International Relations Office of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. Holder of the Certificate of Pedagogical Aptitude with a grade of Very Good. Frequency of a course on Introduction to North-American Law that sparked the interest Hollywood’s in filmic narrative approach to both Private and Public Law issues. Among her interests can be found: Portuguese and Russian literature of the nineteenth century, classical culture, comparative studies , international relations, movies, series , classical to contemporary music , Renaissance culture , painting, common law , Diplomatic Law, Economics, Law Procedure.
