ESC#38: Digital Humanities and Literary Translation

Resume: Currently a global practice, Computer Assisted Translation is less evident when it comes to literary translation, since the literary text resists standardization and problematic units are not easy to discriminate, among other reasons. Practical exercises will address the benefits and limitations of Digital Humanities and Computer Assisted Translation for creative options and skills in English-Portuguese literary translation.

Maarten Janssen is a researcher at the University of Lisbon, and is responsible for the technical development of the PenPAL translation database, as well as several corpus and computational tools such as CorpusWiki, TEITOK, Neotag, and the Vocabulário Ortográfico do Português (VOP). | Manuel Portela teaches at the University of Coimbra, where he directs the FCT PhD Programme in Advanced Studies in the Materialities of Literature. He is the author of Scripting Reading Motions: The Codex and the Computer as Self-reflexive Machines (MIT Press, 2013). Further information. | Margarida Vale de Gato is Assistant Professor at the University of Lisbon and the co-coordinator of the American Studies Research Group in ULICES. As a literary translator, she has produced versions of several French and English canonical texts into Portuguese. She is the Principal Investigator of the project PEnPAL in Translation.
